Three Ways Owning a Pet Is Good for You

Karli’s Evil Cat, Tiger

The next time your dog sniffs someone’s crotch, or your cat treats you with complete disdain, remember this list. Here are three ways owning a pet is good for your health.

1. Pet owners are less likely to feel lonely. Which you probably figured, but researchers at Idaho State University actually tested it.

They asked people to rate how lonely they felt, then had them play with dogs. When they asked them again, they were 60% less likely to say they felt lonely.

2. Kids who grow up with pets don’t have as many allergies. A study at the University of Wisconsin found kids are 17% less likely to suffer from wheezing if there’s a dog in the house, and 15% less likely to develop eczema.

3. They’re good for your heart. And not just because you get more exercise if you own a dog. A study in 2008 found that people who had never owned a cat were 40% more likely to die of a heart attack.

The Three Lamest Excuses for Skipping the Gym

Pic: Custom Fitness of Natomas

Here are the three most common excuses we use for not working out . . . and why they’re all lame. Sadly, they should all sound pretty familiar.

1. “I don’t have time.” If you have kids or a crazy schedule, it might be hard to MAKE time. But you can get a good workout in your living room in 30 minutes. So if you have time to watch another episode of “Maury”, you’ve got time to work out.

2. “It hurts.” Which is basically another way of saying, “I don’t like it, because it’s hard.” Unless you have an actual injury. In that case, see a doctor.

But most of the time you just have to push through the pain, and it starts to get easier. And as you get stronger, it starts to hurt less and less.

3. “I’m too exhausted.” Which again is like saying, “I don’t like it, because it’s hard.” But the irony is that exercise gives you MORE energy.

When you work out, your body sends more oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, and makes your cardiovascular system work better. Which gives you more endurance, and more energy in general. (BroBible / Mayo Clinic)

Don’t Send Flowers on Valentine’s Day . . . Send Them Tomorrow

(pic source: proflowers)

Listen up guys, because this might save you a whole lot of pain and suffering. If you’re planning to send flowers ON Valentine’s Day . . . you’re making a huge mistake. Hear me out.

Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday this year. And it’s not like any woman is gonna reject a bunch of flowers if that’s when she gets them.

But if your wife or girlfriend has a job, you SHOULD send flowers TOMORROW . . . because that way she’ll get them at work.

Guys don’t always think about it, but half the point of getting flowers is showing them off to people. And yes, things like Facebook and Instagram are great for that.

But if her co-workers get flowers tomorrow and she DOESN’T . . . you WILL be held accountable. Even if she doesn’t say anything it, she’ll secretly be resenting you. Obviously if your girlfriend works on Saturday, that day still works.

So get on the horn TODAY and make it happen.

1. Avoid rain and cooking. Water and oil wil stain your boots.

2. Trim your toe nails, don’t overly stuff your ugg boots with thick jeans and size your boots correctly.

3. Keep your Uggs dry…wet Uggs will lose their shape. Tru to keep them in their box and stuff them with newspaper.

4. Baking Powder to Prevent smells…sprinkle a teaspoon of baking powder in your boots, the baking powder will absorb most of the smell.

5. Uggs are not really for ice or snow…expect to slip if you’re not paying attention.

6. Dogs love to chew on Uggs!…it’s probably the leather smell #nobueno

9. They will last longer when you clean and protect them. Use Scotch guard and reapply regularly. Once a month is good. Ugg boots can also be destroyed quite easily during cleaning, so be careful.

10. Fake Ugg boots will make your feet sweat more than an authentic pair will.

11. Dark colors can transfer dye. Will stain skin in the beginning…especially black. Will not harm your feet or skin.

12. Try them out in the summer….take them to the beach. It’s a norm in Australia.

13. Men can wear Uggs too! Ugg boots were created by Australian men, for Australian men.

You Don’t Need to Let Your Car Warm Up When It’s Cold Out… You’re Just Wasting Gas

(pic source: thetruthaboutcars)

A lot of the U.S. is getting hit by a wicked cold front. Which is why THIS caught our eye…

“The Washington Post” just did a story on whether or not warming up your car before you drive actually DOES anything. And the answer is… NO. Or, at least it doesn’t do anything beneficial for the car itself.

It USED to be necessary back when cars had carburetors, which need the engine to warm up before they’ll work right. But by the 1990’s, almost all cars had electronic fuel injectors, which automatically compensate for the temperature. Letting it run for at least 30-60 seconds before driving off should suffice.

So as long as you’re not in a 30-year-old car, you probably don’t need to let it warm up. The only practical reason to do it is so the INSIDE of the car gets warm, or so you can crank the defrost… which is probably why most people do it.

But if you’re running late for work, there’s no need to sit there waiting and worrying if the engine is ready. You could also end up wasting a decent amount of gas. A 2009 survey found that when it’s cold out, the average person lets their car warm up for about five minutes.

And a test showed that when it’s right around zero degrees, letting your car idle for just five minutes can increase your total fuel consumption by 7 to 14%.

NYE Safety Tips

pic source: etcpb.com

If you are planning on partying this New Year’s Eve, here are some safety tips to avoid regrets:

If you drink, don’t drive.
Plan ahead by naming a “designated driver”. Make this your responsibility as a good friend, especially if you’ll be drinking as well.
Make sure and have cab info available…set yourself up with Ubber or Lift before hand.
Make sure your DD has plenty of water, soda, or juice to drink.
Make sure no drunk friends are offering the DD alcohol.
If you party with friends…try to get them to slow down a couple of hours before the end of the night.
Remind friends to pace themselves.
Rent a hotel room for everyone to crash at, within walking distance of the party.
Agree to leave with the people you came with…don’t leave any friends behind. Don’t let your friends leave with strangers.
If you are solo and impaired, call a taxi, stay where you are until you are sober.
Take the keys from someone if you think he/she is too impaired to drive.

Have a Happy and Memorable New Year!!

Four Weird Ways Stores Trick You Into Buying More Stuff

pic source: jonwatts

Check out four weird ways stores trick you into spending more money, just in time before we all go nuts on Black Friday.

1. They have the mannequins make eye contact with you. Instead of looking straight ahead, a lot of mannequins are set up so they’re looking at YOU when you walk by. And without realizing it, you feel obligated to stop and check out what they’re wearing.

2. They use your sense of smell. Researchers have found we spend more time shopping if a store smells like flowers or citrus.

3. They play songs that make you nostalgic. If you’re in a store’s target age range, the music they play is usually inspired by songs that were popular when you were 18. Meaning covers of old songs, or songs that just sound similar to stuff that was popular when you were in high school.

4. They print “sale” signs in red. Almost ALWAYS, because studies have shown red lettering subconsciously makes us more excited about a sale.

And one trick for spending LESS is to go shopping ALONE. When you’re with another person, you spend up to 17% more.

Four Store Credit Cards That Aren’t a Total Rip-Off

pic source: knowzy.com

Around Christmas, it’s tempting to apply for store credit cards at places like The Gap, even though they tend to have really high interest rates. But according to Credit.com, here are four places where store credit cards AREN’T a total rip-off.

1. Kohl’s. There’s no annual fee . . . you get 20% off your next order . . . a coupon for 15% off in the mail . . . and one coupon a month that gets you between 15 and 30% off.

2. Best Buy. You can either get 5% back in credit, or six months of no interest on purchases over $150 . . . and 18 months if you spend more than $430. You also get free shipping on anything over $35. And again, no annual fee.

3. Victoria’s Secret. If you spend more than $250 a year, you get 4% back in store credit. And you get double the reward points for any bras you buy. So that one makes sense if you ALREADY spend $250 a year there. If you don’t, maybe not.

4. Wal-Mart. If you buy gas, you get five cents off per gallon, which isn’t much. But if you’re rebuilding your credit, it’s one of the easiest cards to get approved for. And if you sign up for online statements, they send you your credit score each month.

Just remember that with any credit card, you need to stay under 10% of your limit to improve your credit.
